New economic zone proposed along Long An’s future axis road

At a meeting held in Long An yesterday, a consultant has proposed developing an economic zone in the Southern province as part of a spatial planning scheme to build an axis road linking HCMC, Long An and Tien Giang.

Two suggestions had been made for the economic zone project, according to Do Ngoc Hoan, Director of Planning and Design Consulting Center – the consultant – under the Southern Institute for Spatial Planning.

Once finished, the axis road will run through four districts of Long An: Can Giuoc, Chau Thanh, Can Duoc and Tan Tru.

Reportedly, the economic zone will cover more than 32,000 hectares in two districts Can Giuoc and Can Duoc. The zone is projected to house a 7,800-hectare hi-tech agriculture park, a 5,900-hectare industrial and international sea port area, as well as an urban area covering some 15,000 hectares in the center.

In relation to the first suggestion, the industrial-sea port area will be built on the riverside of Can Duoc, while the backup land for developing the urban area will be in Chau Thanh District that shares a boundary with the provincial city of Tan An.

Meanwhile, Hoan said under the second suggestion, the riverside land of the industrial area in Can Duoc and the backup land in Chau Thanh will be reduced.

The consultant preferred the second suggestion and planned to develop the urban area in the core areas of Can Duoc and Can Giuoc.

Although the proposal has yet to receive the approval of the prime minister, Hoan said that the Long An economic zone will be on par with the development of the Hiep Phuoc urban port complex and the upcoming Ring Road 4.

Responding to the consultant’s proposal, Chairman of Long An People’s Committee Tran Van Can said the Ministry of Planning and Investment was in favor of the economic zone project, but the Government will consider approving it only after 2020.

Along with the economic zone, the consultant also proposed building two to three roads in the four districts, which will cross the axis road.
